PLANO, TX --

JC Penney has announced it will be closing 33 underperforming stores, including two in Florida.

The locations in Gulf View Square in Port Richey and Lake Square Mall in Leesburg are among the stores on the chopping block.

The closings will also mean the loss of about 2,000 jobs.Corporate officials said the closures are part of the company's turnaround efforts, and that they expect to save about $65 million per year by closing the stores.

JC Penney has struggled in the past year, with massive losses and sales drops under former CEO Ron Johnson, who was ousted last year. The retailer did say they were moving ahead with plans to open a new store location in Brooklyn, N.Y.
